WHAT IS A FUPA?
FUPA may sound like a military acronym, but it stands for “Fat Upper Pubic Area,” a very frustrating condition for many women (and men).
Lately discussed on several television talk shows, FUPA is the embarrassing mound of fat that can collect in the upper pubic area due to a variety of reasons. For some women, it can occur just from gaining weight, or it may be caused by a “c” section scar. Other women that have had a mommy makeover or a tummy tuck with liposuction in their abdominal area may find that their surgeon was reluctant to travel too far south leaving them with fullness in their pubic area that they find uncomfortable. However, there is supposed to be some fat there because it protects the pubic symphysis, which is where the two pelvic bones connect. It takes the expertise of a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon to find the correct balance.

Another situation that can be the cause of the pubic mound is if the patient should gain weight after a tummy tuck. If there has only been the removal of fat cells above the mons pubis, then fat gain may go to the FUPA.
Sometimes the area responds well to diet and exercise, but for those that do not see any improvement or are looking for a permanent solution, surgery may be the answer.
What To Do About A FUPA
Treatment will vary depending on the cause and the severity of the condition. For many patients, liposuction may be the answer to reducing the mons. However, some patients, in particular, those who have gained a lot of weight (and those who have lost a lot of weight) may have folds of tissue and skin. These folds of skin most likely won’t retract after liposuction. Therefore, surgical excision will be required.
Miguel Delgado, M.D. states that this condition is not exclusive to women; he has seen men in consultation for gynecomastia surgery who request additional procedures such as a tummy tuck and reduction of their FUPA.
