CONTRADICTION OF TERMS
The use of breast implants with a breast reduction sounds like a contradiction of terms. However, there are rare occasions where implants are used.
The goal of breast reduction is to remove enough fat and tissue to give a woman relief from her large and pendulous breasts. However, a breast reduction may leave the breast lacking upper pole fullness.
Upper pole fullness can be accomplished by using the patient’s own tissue and this is the preferred method. The tissue that is being removed during surgery may be moved into a pocket created in the upper pole. Using a patient’s tissue can get a great result, but for some patients the tissue may have a tendency to gravitate South over time and they might request that an implant is used.

Miguel Delgado, M.D. prefers to use the patients tissue and not breast implants due to constant issues with implants. However, some patients request implants for fullness of the upper pole, and so on rare occasions, Miguel Delgado, M.D. will accommodate his patients, but it is not his preference.
Plastic surgeons have opposing opinions on the use of breast implants with a breast reduction. It is important that a woman sees a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon who specializes in breast surgery. The breast reduction patient needs a surgeon who will take the time to be sure she understands all the options of surgery and what will be best for her.
