What is Recovery Like for Breast Reduction Surgery?
San Francisco women have asked what the recovery from breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is like so that they know what to expect and how to plan for it.
Post-Operation Recovery
After being in recovery for a few hours and Dr. Delgado feels it is safe most women are able to go home after their breast reduction surgery. Some women choose to have additional procedures, such as a tummy tuck, (known as a Mommy Makeover), in this case the patient would be kept overnight, in the safe and monitored environment of accredited Marin Cosmetic Surgery Center.
Caregiver Needed For Patient
The patient will need to have a responsible person pick them up after surgery, and the patient will need to have assistance at home for at least the first 24 hours. Sleep elevated to reduce swelling. After 3 to 5 days, the drains will be removed (if placed), and the dressings will be changed.
Sponge Baths
Only sponge baths are permitted until 24 hours after removal of the drains, and then the patient can safely shower. There may be some discomfort for a day or two, pain medication will be prescribed for this.
Bruising Post-Operation
Bruising and swelling are normal and usually last for about a week, but allow 2 weeks for recovery before returning to normal activities. Strenuous exercise needs to be avoided for 3 to 4 weeks.
