ARM LIFT SURGERY SOLVES BAT WINGS
A brachioplasty is a procedure for people who have excess skin and fat that droops from the armpit to the elbow. Some people refer to this unattractive condition as an arm lift or bat wings.
Usually, the redundant skin is caused by massive weight loss but can be from aging or even genetics. Many people hide their upper arms by wearing long sleeve clothing. Wearing clothing to hide their arms can be very uncomfortable in warm or hot weather. A brachioplasty will reduce excess sagging skin, smooth, and tighten underlying supportive tissue giving shapely definition to the upper arms.
VARIOUS ARM LIFT PROCEDURES
The resulting scars will depend on the extent of the procedure performed, as there are different options:
- Liposuction only: Candidates for liposuction alone have good skin elasticity. Therefore skin excision is not needed.
- Limited Incision: Patients who have loose skin close to the armpit and do not have much fatty tissue, may have an incision only in the armpit that will fade with time and be almost undetectable.
- Standard brachioplasty or arm lift: For patients with a lot of excess skin and fat, there will be an incision that starts at the armpit and extending to the elbow. Once the scar has faded, it won’t be as noticeable, but patients need to consider the trade-off for smooth arms.
- Extended brachioplasty or arm lift: In addition to the standard arm lift the incision will extend from the armpit part way down the side of the chest to include loose skin and fat under the arm. An extended brachioplasty is usually needed for patients who have lost a massive amount of weight.
